MAMA Awards History
The MAMA Awards, formerly known as the Mnet Asian Music Awards, were first held in Seoul, South Korea, in 1999. It was initially aired on Mnet and was primarily focused on K-pop artists, although it has since expanded to include other Asian artists.
In 2009, the event was renamed to the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) to reflect its expansion outside of South Korea. Since 2010, MAMA has been held in various Asian countries and cities outside of South Korea, including Macau, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
In 2022, the event was rebranded as simply the “MAMA Awards”. Over its 20-plus years of history, the show has hosted performances and honored a wide range of artists, including international stars like Stevie Wonder, Janet Jackson, Dua Lipa, and Ed Sheeran.
